Empowering local news communicators

Submitted by ipublicis on Tue, 11/25/2008 - 12:52.

We are preparing a project that will allow local newspapers and individuals that wish to produce a structured news media website to do it the easy way. And almost for free (€5,00/month is almost free).

Searching for funding to implement it is the starting point.

A new great venture from the Knight Foundation is their newest community site to discuss the future of information.

Despite the seemingly never-ending flow of news, people around the globe still struggle to find the information they need to make basic decisions about their life.

Two events to attend

Submitted by ipublicis on Wed, 10/22/2008 - 20:05.

One is the SAPO Codebits, which is a sort of Google Summer Of Code but smaller and directed to the portuguese public. It's a web programming contest different from others. No rules, promotes an informal and relaxed environment, try to create the necessary conditions to participants' creativity and inovation. Can check at SAPO Codebits wiki. Two of my friends will be there, talking both and one competing with a very interesting Drupal-based project.

This a very interesting contest for those working with Free Software and with community projects. Some info from their own site:

Knight Foundation plans to invest at least $25 million over five years in the search for bold community news and social media experiments.

In a somewhat recent paper from Fang Wu and Bernardo A. Huberman (HP Laboratories) you can read a really interesting and "mathematically"-based exposition on the subject and how should website based businesses should react. Get it here

Fair and honest pricing

Submitted by ipublicis on Wed, 08/13/2008 - 22:43.

A big portion of our time is spent in doing price estimatives to our clients to be projects. Many don't get even a reply and we don't think that we are pricy.

Many people think that making a simple move of their website from Mambo to Drupal is a simple task. It can be not so hard to accomplish but is is not easy. And if the website owners wish to keep the design then we could have to make new modules -- or change a lot existing ones -- to do what they did... not to mention the design portability.
